Post by BIT0122-Amit on Fri Sep 24, 2010 2:53 am

I just created a group for the members of IITDU programming club at yahoo.

You better start joining there.

I am planning to make two 2nd batch students moderator there, as well as 1/2 moderators from 1st batch who will oversee the overall conduct in that group.

that's all.

I forgot to suggest, there should be a club section in this forum with two subsections: Debate and Programming (And hope more later).
I personally dislike yahoo groups. Members simply misuse that thing with non-relevant mails.

But yahoo groups are the only medium for teachers to contact with a whole batch at a time, also forum is used by only a handful of students of 2nd batch. So, until we see entire two batches fully uses forum, I would like to use groups for clubs.

That can be prevented actually. In a programming club, considering that there are not many activities, it can be arranged in a way that all notices will be posted by moderators only. If any student wants to share a notice, he can send it to one/more than one moderators for approval.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

But I am not exactly sure why we would want a debate section. The only reason that I can think of is to share notices, which can be easily done using yahoo group.

IITDUPC is a different story though. Even people not interested in contests can be benefited by it. This section can be used for sharing problems, tricks, notices bla bla bla different types of activities which concern programming. Even people who are not interested in participating in programming contests will get benefited by it.

There is another way it can be arranged by the way. If you are really sure that you must have a debate section, and a programming club section, and a separate section for each of future clubs there is going to be, I suggest this:

1. There will be groups created for you, namely IITPC, IITDC... etc.
2. The sections will be viewable by the group members only.

The way the forum is going bloated is really scary. When you suggest for future sections, please consider the number of posts it might get per month. Otherwise, it will get lots of sections .... with very few activities in most of them.

If the teacher is a member of a forum group, he can send a private message to them all at once Smile

I have created a forum group for you just now

See if you can find the iitdupc group.

A similar group can be opened for all clubs.

BTW,
I am going to make Iftekhar and Habib moderators of the IITPC group. And also changing the group membership from open to approval by admin/moderator only.

Iftekhar and Habib, if you do not like this decision, I can remove your moderator powers. But I would request you to perform as moderators, at least for a while.

you two will:

1. approve membership request sent by others(BIT 2nd batch only. Leave 1st batch to me)
2. Send special notices if necessary
3. Approve/Reject possible spam messages sent by members

Thanks for the responsibility you have given. I would take it as a challenge.
btw I would like to know further about a forum group.
will the teachers be member in the forum group from yahoo group? Or they have to be members of the forum first?

They need to be a member of the forum+a member of that forum group to send messages to all members of that group.

anyway, I have changed the yahoo group description from English to full Bangla, and added some additional details.

IITDU Programming club

remember, if they do not give away their identity, you need to tell them that they must.

I am pissed off seeing comments like, "No comments", "Hi", "I want to be a member of this group"
