Using ZOOM ZTE modem in UBUNTU 10.04

Hello ZOOM users!

I think you all faced the problem to use zoom in Ubuntu, right?

I was suffering from the problem for many since I am using ZTE Internet
modem. I talked to the Zoom experts of Citycell, they gave some
solution, but that didn't work indeed. I tried and tried...failed



I couldn't use Ubuntu for this reason(not having Internet access)

At last I have decided to change my zoom modem.



Some days ago UBUNTU 10.04 came. I installed it in my PC and found that
zoom is working here

I had inserted the modem and click in the connection icon (in the right
side in upper panel) and saw that a new modem connected and then
configure from VPN configure.When you go to the VPN configure and want
to add the connection to the mobile broad band it will show you the
device name(ZTE incorporated ZTE CDMA Tech). After clicking forward you
have to give the country name(Bangladesh), provider(Citycell) and then
it ask for your number (#777), user name(waps), password(waps). Then
click apply. you are now connected to the Internet.

easy, isn't it?
Try it now.


I am very very happy that I can now use Internet in UBUNTU
UBUNTU 10.04 is awesome...great!!! I love it

Some of you have told that, you can't use ZOOM in UBUNTU using my given procedure yet. I am giving the snapshots with instruction that will be very helpful.








এখানে আমি ZOOM Modem(ZTE 880) UBUNTU 10.04 তে
কানেক্ট করার কিছু ছবি দিচ্ছি।
আশা করি এতে এই প্রক্রিয়াটি বুঝতে আরও সহজ হবে।

১. প্রথমে মডেমটি
কম্পিউটারে লাগিয়ে কিছুক্ষন অপেক্ষা করুন। এরপর নটিফিকেশন এরিয়া তে mouse
right click করে Edit connection option টি
তে click করুন।







২. নিচের window টির মত একটি window আসবে।
সেখান থেকে Mobile Broadband এ ক্লিক
করুন। তারপর Add button এ ক্লিক করুন।





৩. এরপর যে window টি আসবে তা থেকে ZTE
Incorporated ZTE CDMA Tech সিলেক্ট করুন
এবং forward চাপুন।




৪. Provider's country থেকে Bangladesh
সিলেক্ট করে forward চাপুন।



৫. এরপরের window থেকে আপনার Provider choose করুন।
Provider List থেকে আপনার
Provider (Citycell) খুঁজে পাবেন না। নিচের "I
can't find my provider and I wish to enter it manually" সিলেক্ট
করে সেখানে "Citycell" type করুন। forward
চাপুন।



৬. Apply চাপুন।



৭. নিচের ছবির মত edit citycell connection window আসার
পর সেখান থেকে Mobile Broadband এ যেয়ে number দিন
#777, username দিন waps, password ও দিন waps.



৮. Apply চাপুন।




আপনার Connection setup হয়ে গেছে। এবার
ওই notification area তেই mouse
left click করলে আপনি আপনার Citycell connection দেখতে
পাবেন। সেখানে click করলে আপনি Internet এর
সংযোগ পাবেন।
Slow connection এর কারনে মাঝে মাঝে "No
Network" দেখাতে পারে। হতাশ হবেন না। কিছুক্ষন পর আবার Citycell
connection এ ক্লিক করুন, Network শক্তিশালী হলে Connection পাবেন।
আপনি এর পর যেকোনো Browser থেকে ইন্টারনেট Browse করতে
পারবেন। এরপর থেকে যতবারই আপনি UBUNTU তে ঢুকবেন কোনো
কিছু Setup করতে হবেনা।
শুধুমাত্র Notification area থেকে Citycell Connection এ click
করে ইন্টারনেট
এর সংযোগ পাবেন।

আশা করি এবার আপনি আপনার উবুন্টু ১০.০৪ এ জুম ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন।

তাবাসসুম, আপনি যা যা করেছেন, এর সবই আমি করেছি কিন্তু কানেক্ট হচ্ছে না। আজ দু'দিন ধরে চেষ্টা করছি। তবে আপনি কিন্তু আপনার এ পোষ্টে zoom modem এর মডেল নাম্বার দেননি। আমার মডেম হচ্ছে- ZTE GM 880

Tabassum, you can provide some screen shots right? Or.. you can bring the model and connection cable tomorrow at class so we can make some screen shots / screen video of establishing a brand new connection.

that way.. we will be able to check whether the instructions are flawless or not.

@ রিপন-->আমি দুঃখিত মডেল এর নাম না দেয়ার জন্য। আমার জুম মডেম আপনার যেটা সেটাই। তবে কেন আপনারটা সংযোগ পাচ্ছেনা বুঝতে পারছিনা...মাঝে মাঝে অবশ্য আমার টাও সংযোগ পায়না, নেট এর গতি খুব কম থাকায় এই সমস্যা হতে পারে। আপনার OS উবুন্টু এর কোন ভার্সন? এটা কিন্তু UBUNTU 10.04 ছাড়া কোথাও কাজ করবেনা। আমি UBUNTU 9.10 -এ অনেক ধরনের প্রচেষ্টা চালিয়েও আমার মডেম কাজ করাতে পারিনি।
আমি যত দ্রুত সম্ভব connect করার কিছু screen shot দিয়ে দিব এখানেই, তখন আরও পরিষ্কার হবে আশা কুরছি।

হ্যাঁ, উবুন্টু ১০.০৪। শতভাগ নতুন ইউজার আমি। আমাদের প্রযুক্তি ও প্রযুক্তি ফোরামে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে গলদঘর্ম হয়ে গিয়েছি ভাই। তবু কানেক্ট করতে পারছি না। আমি নিশ্চিত যে, আমারই কোথাও ভুল হচ্ছে। কিন্তু বুঝতে পারছি না ভুলটা কোথায়? আন্তরিক উত্তর দেয়ার জন্য ধন্যবাদ আপনাকে। সবচেয়ে বেশী ধন্যবাদ প্রশাসনকে। কারণ ''Adminship / Moderatorship is not about power, it is about Responsibility''- এমন কথা আমার জীবনে কোথাও পড়িনি। এখানেই প্রথম। এটা যে শুধু কথার কথা নয়, কাজেও প্রমাণ দেখলাম। তাই আমি সিটিসেল কানেক্ট করতে না পারলেও দুঃখ নেই।

Ripon, I am also a big sufferer of this problem of ZOOM modem. I talked to Citycell customer care and they provide me procedure to connect it in UBUNTU 9.10 but it didn't work.Even I had decided to buy a new connection from different Internet provider. At last, I have found that and really very very happy

I will pretend that I didn't hear what Ripon said .. because it is kinda embarrassing to me

Anyway, I don't think Ubuntu 9.10's instructions will work with Ubuntu 10.04 because there are structural differences between these two.
Again, considering that he is a complete newbie, he won't probably be able to follow the instructions properly, thus creating a risk of crashing his ubuntu.

I suggest that Ripon better wait for the screenshots
