Installing SpringSource Toolsuite within Eclipse EE

Post by BIT0102-Mohaimin on Sun Jul 17, 2011 1:02 pm

Yesterday, I downloaded Eclipse Indigo for Java EE and Springsource Toolsuite (STS), but for some unknown reason, I could not install STS.
So I went to STS website and found an amazing thing: You can install spring perspective within your Eclipse EE! STS is a big software, download size is more than 300 MB. But if you install the spring perspective, the download size will be much smaller because most of the required features are already available within Eclipse.
I have done it in Linux(Ubuntu) environment. But it should work for windows too.

The official instruction is available in this pdf provided by STS. I am typing it here in a shorter form for your convenience.

  1. First, you must have Eclipse EE installed. Either Helios or Indigo. Indigo is the latest release at the moment. I hope the same instruction will be applicable for future versions too. I did it in Indigo. Replace all 3.7 with 3.6 in the instructions bellow if you have Helios

  2. Go to Window -> Preferences -> Install/Update -> Available Update Sites and disable all the sites you see there.

  3. If you have Indigo, copy this:
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <bookmarks>
      <site url="http://dist.springsource.com/release/TOOLS/update/e3.7"
            selected="true"
            name="SpringSource Update Site for Eclipse 3.7"/>
      <site url="http://dist.springsource.com/release/TOOLS/composite/e3.7"
            selected="true"
            name="SpringSource Update Site for Eclipse 3.7 (Dependencies)"/>
      <site url="http://download.eclipse.org/releases/indigo"
            selected="true"
            name="Indigo"/>
    </bookmarks>

    For Helios, copy this:
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <bookmarks>
       <site url="http://dist.springsource.com/release/TOOLS/update/e3.6"
             selected="true"
             name="SpringSource Update Site for Eclipse 3.6"/>
       <site url="http://dist.springsource.com/release/TOOLS/composite/e3.6"
             selected="true"
             name="SpringSource Update Site for Eclipse 3.6 (Dependencies)"/>
       <site url="http://download.eclipse.org/releases/helios"
             selected="true"
             name="Helios"/>
    </bookmarks>

    Save in a file with name bookmarks.xml

  4. Go to Window -> Preferences -> Install/Update -> Available Update Sites

  5. Click import and select the file bookmark.xml, click ok

  6. Go to Help -> Install New Software

  7. In the Work with field select SpringSource Update Site for Eclipse 3.7

  8. At this point, the screen shot in the pdf did not match with me. So, this instruction is different from the instruction in the official instructions:
    Select at least Core/STS others are optional. I selected Extension/STS too

  9. Now it all about pressing Next

Enjoy spring, Happy Coding!
