Do college grades affect one's job chances?

Post by InterviewMantra on Tue Aug 11, 2009 2:11 am

College grades certainly affect job prospects. The better your college grades, the greater your chances to find a good employer, and vice versa. All the tier-one companies such as IBM, Google, Microsoft etc. give lot of importance to academics during selection.

It also depends, whether you have applied to an entry level job, or to a job
that requires prior experience. If you already have prior experience, your college grades do not really matter much. It might be just one of those cutoff factors that accounts to 5% of all the factors.

If you are a fresh graduate with no job experience, you would be judged based on your grades in college. This is reasonable in a way - if you have no work history, how do I know how good you are, short of calling you for an interview?

Usually companies set a cut off score below which they would ignore your resume. Typically cutoff score would be 60% or above. (60% is equivalent of Grade points 2.4 on scale 4).

If you do not have college percentage above 60%, it is time for you to earn some certifications or acquire extra skills to catch up. But, never fake your grades.Companies strictly follow their selection criteria. They would not
hesitate to fire you in case they get to know about your real grades. Tips to explain poor grades in an interview.

I heard of a guy with college score of 59.9% who was fired and blacklisted just because he fell 0.1% short of company's criterion of 60%. So never take chances and avoid such embarrassing situation(getting fired).

Three things that should not be asked:
1. Man's salary.
2. Lady's age.
3. Graduate's grades.

But unfortunately, can not avoid any of these in an interview!

A very informative post Sridhar Smile

If you do not have college percentage above
60%, it is time for you to earn some certifications or acquire extra
skills to catch up
Can you please elaborate this part? By certificates, a lot of things can be meant, and I want to have a precise idea here.

"My overall grades suffered because I got bored with theory. I scored
higher marks for the practical courses and hands-on lab work, which I
feel is more relevant when it comes to doing the type of work required
in this position. For example, I excelled in..."
now that is interesting :p

Good that you asked Amit. I realize that I should have been more verbose about this. Probably I will write a blog post answering your question soon.

I will quickly answer you for now,

The bottom line to cover your low grades is "Show Activity"

You need to do something interesting apart from regular curricular. For example it may also be maintaining a forum. You are a moderator of this forum. You can highlight this in your resume. This catches eyes of the employer, he will get a feeling that you are an active guy if not a studious guy.

Other activities that you could do are
1. Participate in paper presentations. (Of course, with an attitude of "Participate to Win"). Prizes in paper presentation carry great weight on a fresher's resume.

2. Conduct or participate in Inter College Tech festival or cultural festival. You would be awarded participation certificates, show off these certificates, highlight this in your resume.

3. Join a technical course in any of the latest software technologies such as Java, dot Net etc. Try to get a diploma or something. Highlight this in your resume.

These are just few of many things that you could do.
